Safari 4 Beta + Digg.com = Frustration

So of course I went out and downloaded the new Safari 4 Beta as soon as it came out (you should too), but encountered a serious issue right off the bat.

I am a serious fan of digg.com and noticed right away that Safari 4 was opening all of the links from Digg in a ‘New Window’ instead of in a ‘New Tab’. This might not sound like a huge deal, but for me it was going to be a Safari killer. Turns out this can be fixed easily (although I only have the fix for Mac at this point):

If you are using Windows, I’m not sure if there is a work-around.”

It worked for me (I had to restart Safari after running the command) and now all my clicks open links in new tabs rather than new windows.

I went to a Guitar Hero party and drank beer. Turns out I’m not very good at Guitar Hero, and I didn’t make it into any of the pictures, but I did do a good job at downing a couple cold ones.

Live Trap Didn’t Work

We recently discovered that we have ….had a mouse problem.

Every couple of days we would find half eaten cookies, graham crackers, chocolate bars, etc. in our pantry.  The mouse in question was definitely a big eater.  He was able to eat about a quarter of an entire pack of graham crackers in one night!  I wish I would have taken pictures of everything we’ve found that has been chewed up, but I wasn’t thinking about it.

Not only did the mouse like to eat our food, he liked to sleep, eat, and crap in all of our kitchen drawers.  These drawers held our clean silverware, clean towels, and the occasional random mouse turds.

Kristin was not very fond of our mouse as he was destroying some of our spatulas, eating through our jar openers, not to mention making us throw away different packages of food on a daily basis, depending on what the mouse wanted to eat the night before.

I kept saying that I would put some mouse traps out, but she didn’t like the idea of killing it.  I advised we could use something like a glue trap and then just release him outside (if I could pry him off the trap).  She didn’t like that idea either as the dog might accidentally get into it (this rules out poison of course).

We settled on getting a live mouse trap, in which he is supposed to enter the trap to eat the bait (I used peanut butter, cookie pieces, and a half an Oreo), and then not be able to get back out.

We left this live mouse trap out for an entire week, checking it every morning with no success.  I soon started referring to the trap as ‘the mouse house’.

While cleaning out the basement yesterday, I came across two REAL mouse traps.  I told Kristin I would be putting the REAL traps out in addition to the mouse condo she bought.  I baited them last night before I went to bed with peanut butter.

Even though I made fun of Kristin for wanting to use a live trap, I was pretty sure it would do the job.  After placing the live traps, I felt kind of nervous that the mouse might actually enjoy my traps more than his cozy little condo we’d bought him, but I was definitely tired of cleaning up after him.  After all I’d already given him a week to show up in the mouse house so I could free him somewhere far away from here.

I woke up this morning and checked the traps.  It turns out REAL mousetraps work pretty well.
The mouse ate every last bit of peanut butter from the trap.

It was obvious that when the trap went off, my mouse problem ended VERY quickly, it had crushed not only his neck, but the entire back of his skull.  I cleaned up all the blood (the trap was kind of stuck to the floor) and disposed of our mouse.

I still feel kind of bad, and my wife is probably going to freak when I tell her the story when she gets home.

But………we no longer have a mouse in our house.

Weekly Timeline

Today I added some code to the site that will display a weekly “journal” of what I’ve been up to.

It will track what I do online from all of my social profiles and throw them into a list.  It’s not much, but it’s a start to getting some new content on the site.  You can find it at the top of the page labeled “My Life”.
